On a field in perfect playing condition, the University association football team defeated Yale last Saturday in the second contest of the intercollegiate series by the score of 4 to 0. The team played a fast, consistent game, the forwards, particularly Baker and Jennings, showing excellent team work, while the backs proved a strong defence. Yale exhibited a hard but somewhat slower game, Shepard, Gamble, and Gray showing up particularly well.
Harvard won the toss and Yale kicked off against the wind. For the first few minutes, there was no apparent advantage on either side. After both teams had tried to score, Francke finally tallied on a long shot from mid-field, and during the remainder of the half the play was principally in Yale's territory. Carnochan secured the second goal by good individual work after the ball had been brought within shooting distance by the excellent team work of the forward line. Yale several times tried for a goal, but Nichols proved invincible.
During the second half, Harvard quite outplayed her opponents, the forwards holding together well and the backs proving strong on both offence and defence. Weld, who played an excellent game throughout, secured the third goal by a beautifully executed corner kick, while the fourth came after a scrimmage in front of the goal, the ball being forced in by Baker. The game ended with the ball in Harvard's territory.
The summary: Score -- Harvard 4, Yale 0. Goals -- Francke, Carnochan, Weld, Baker. Referee--Williams, Linesmen--Burgess and McHenry. Time--45-minute halves. Attendance--250.
