Trials for the University golf team will begin at the Oakley Country Club on Wednesday, and will extend until the spring vacation. Ten men will be retained after that time, who by a special concession will be allowed the use of the Oakley course until June 1 upon payment of $15. From competition among these ten, the team will be chosen.
A petition to allow Freshmen to play on the University team in the spring matches has been submitted to the Athletic Committee, and will be acted upon tomorrow evening. Formerly Freshmen have been allowed neither membership on the University, nor to form a team of their own, and it has therefore been difficult to determine who among them were worthy of representing the University in the intercollegiates in September of their Sophomore year.
Although two members of last year's team, B. W. Estabrook '14 and F. V. Burton '14, will not be available, and although another, F. Sargent '14, will be on hand only for the spring matches, the outlook for the team this spring and next fall is quite satisfactory. The following seven men who played last year are still eligible: E. P. Allis '15, Captain R. M. Baker '16, H. K. Caner '15, F. R. Devereux '16, S. P. Griffitts '15, J. G. Heyburn '16 and C. S. Weeks '14.
In addition to the college championship tournament which will be run off some time in May, matches will in all probability be played with Williams, Braeburn Country Club, Brookline Country Club, Fall River Golf Club and the Agawam Hunt Club of Providence. The intercollegiate tournament will take place this year at the Garden City Golf Club, Garden City, Long Island, during the second week in September.
