MAHAN WORSTS BATES PITCHER

HIS BRILLIANT WORK COMBINED WITH TIMELY HITS TAKES GAME.

In the fastest and best played game seen on Soldiers Field this year, the University baseball team yesterday defeated the Bates nine 2 to 1. The contest was a pitcher's battle throughout, Mahan having the better of the argument after the first inning.

The work of Mahan was easily the feature of the game. Aside from a squally first inning, he exhibited perfect control, together with speed and a good assortment of curves. In the last eight innings only 25 Bates men went to the plate, and only two hit safely during the entire game.

McDonald scored the visitors' only run, after he had been hit and stolen second. Coady walked, but was immediately caught off first. Fuller sacrificed, advancing McDonald who later scored on Talbot's single to center. Thereafter only one Bates man was able to reach second.

Harvard could not equalize matters until the fifth inning, when Milholland singled to right, reached second on Mahan's sacrifice and tallied on Cobb's error on Waterman's grounder. Clean hitting brought victory to the University in the eighth. Nash singled to left, stole second, and was knocked home by Ayres. HARVARD.   a.b.  r.  b.h.  p.o.  a.  e.
