SCARCITY OF 1917 DEBATERS

Attempt to be Made to Hold Trials Tonight, After Abandonment Because of Lack of Interest.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Because of the lack of interest shown by the Freshman class, the trials for the teams for the triangular debate with Yale and Princeton could not be held last Wednesday as scheduled. They have been postponed until this evening, and will take place in Harvard 6 at 7.15 o'clock. All new candidates should report to J. Russell, Jr., '17, Russell 24, sometime today.

In former years, between 30 and 40 men have reported for these trials, while this year only 15 have thus far shown any interest. It is almost impossible to choose two good teams and two alternates, eight men in all, out of the present 15 candidates. Unless an immediate and widespread response is made, the chances for developing winning teams will be small.

Candidates must speak for five minutes on either side of the question: "Resolved, That immigration to the United States be further restricted, providing that every immigrant shall be able to read and write in either his native language or in English." About 20 men will be retained for the second trials. The judges tonight will be S. L. Garrison 2L., H. H. Breland 2L., and M. Suravitz 2L. The latter has been selected as coach of the Freshman team.

Canvass Freshmen for $200.

A canvass of the Freshman class is now being made for funds for the support, of the 1917 team. This year a Freshman team will be sent to Princeton, and consequently liberal contributions are needed to defray the expenses of the trip. Former classes have always responded generously, and 1917 should prove no exception. It is estimated that $200 must be secured to cover the necessary expenditures.
