GOOD OARS IN FRESHMAN CLASS

With the ending of the fall rowing practice for the Freshman and interdormitory crews last week, one of the most successful fall seasons for the Freshmen in the history of rowing at the University was brought to a close. The men were called out during the second week after College opened and practice was held daily up to last Thursday. There were three crews from each dormitory working under the supervision of Coach Wray and receiving special attention from G. M. MacVicar '15.

On November 2 three Freshman eights were made up and additional work for the men in those boats began.

The dormitory crews showed rapid advancement after the first few weeks and by the time the fall regatta was held they were rowing in very good form. On the first day of this regatta, October 27, the third Gore crew led the third Standish crew by three-quarters of a length with the Smith boat a close third. In the second crew races, held the following day, the dormitory boats finished in the same order. In the first crew races on October 29, the Standish crew led the Gore boat by a half a length, Smith finishing a length and a half behind Gore. This brought the first session of work for the Freshmen to an end. The makeup of the first three dormitory boats was as follows:

First Standish.--Stroke, Parker; 7, Dickey; 6, F. G. Balch; 5, Knauth; 4; Gundry; 3, Longyear; 2, Wright; bow, Felsom; cox, Place.

First Gore.--Stroke, Putnam; 7. Williams; 6, Olyphant; 5, Nathan; 4, Holt; 3, Gray; 2, Morgan; bow, Reed; cox., Kielty.

First Smith.--De Veau; 7, Quimby; 6, Busk; 5, Brazer; 4, Dudley; 3, MacDonald; 2, Shattuck; bow, Frazer; cox., Jackson.

From November 2 on the Freshman eights took daily spins on the river, the distance and speed being gradually increased until they were doing as hard daily work as the University crews had done. The Freshmen showed consistent improvement and considerable power in their work and there seems little doubt but that next spring will see another championship Freshman crew. The men in the first two crews were as follows:
