To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

With reference to a communication favoring a "college orchestra" which appeared in your columns yesterday, we feel that a replay is necessary, lest those unacquainted with the activities of the Pierian Sodality Orchestra may be led to a wrong impression regarding the same. Mr. Goldberg's favors the following reforms more systematic regulation of discipline, programs, and personnel. A review of our present season alone would be sufficient to show that the standard of the Pierian Sodality not only satisfies Mr. Goldberg's demands, but surpasses those set by many of the orchestras subsidized by the faculties of other colleges. As to discipline, the abrupt termination by the management of Mr. Goldberg's connection with the orchestra a few days previous to the appearance of his communication may in the opinion of some, indicate too much severity.

Our repertoire this year has included compositions by Haydn, Mozart, Gluck, Wagner, Humperdinck, Sibelius, Brahms, Gounod, Pierne, Elgar, and others. Perhaps Mr. Goldberg demands a higher standard than this.

The Pierian Sodality Orchestra, on account of its nature, is probably the most cosmopolitan of all organizations at Harvard. The difficulties attending the choice of men of the necessary technical ability cause it to be such. R.H. ANDERSON '14.   E.H. BARRY '15.
