One of the most successful fall training seasons in the history of rowing here came to a close yesterday afternoon with the more important races which marked the last day of the regatta.
In the race between the two University boats, Crew B defeated Crew A by a scant ten feet after a mile and seven-eighths of continual struggle. One boat replaced the other in the lead all the way down the course, until, in the final sprint, Crew B forged slightly ahead and crossed the finish line just in advance of the opposing eight.
The Freshman crews brought their first session of work on the river to an end when the first boats from Gore, Smith and Standish Halls competed over a mile course. The crews line up at the Cottage Farm Bridge and at the signal Standish shot ahead, gaining a ten-foot lead. Rowing about 32 strokes to the minute the Standish boat maintained the lead during the early part of the race despite the efforts of Gore and Smith. As the boats approached the finish line the race developed into a struggle between Standish and Gore, but Standish had the stronger finish and crossed the line a winner by half a length, Gore leading the Smith boat by a length and a half.

The final race of the graded club crews in the competition for the Filley cup was close and exciting throughout. The first Eliot and Thayer crews quickly distanced the second club crews and went down the course bow to bow. In a thrilling race to the finish line, the Thayer crew nosed out the Eliot boat by a meagre five feet, the second Eliot showing a remarkable sprint during the entire last half-mile and closing up gradually on the leading boats until but four feet separted the bows of the first and second Eliot eights as they swept across the line, a good two and a half lengths in front of the second Thayer crew.
The final reckoning of the points showed that the Eliot Club had won the Filley cup, having secured 8 1-2 points to Thayer's 6 1-2. Individual cups will be awarded to those members of each of the first and second club crews which defeated their respective adversaries, and medals will also be given to those members of the winning third, fourth and fifth club crews.
Gore Hall barely succeeded in winning the Slocum trophy, her total of points amounting to ten, a lead of but one point over the total of nine which Standish obtained. Smith Hall was a poor third, gaining but three points. Cups will be awarded to the first dormitory crew which defeated both opponents, and medals to those men on the second and third crews which were victorious in their respective races.
There will be no more rowing for the eights until the spring training season starts. However the men on the two University boats will take daily spins in singles in preparation for races to be held on November 5.
