The University football squad was put through a long gruelling session yesterday afternoon. The work was even more driving than on Tuesday, for the regulars lined up for 25 minutes against the second team, and Team B scrimmaged for an equal length of time. Team A pressed through the scrubs for five touchdowns, and Captain Brickley kicked a field goal, one of the very few he has tried this season.
The forward line of the regular team was tentatively shifted, Weston taking which will compete in a series for the Haughton Cup. The regular second team will play several outside games, but will be used mainly for practice against the University team. The "H Second" insignia will as usual be awarded the members of this team.
The winning eleven in the Haughton Cup series will receive 15 cups to be distributed among those of its men participating in the most games. Moreover, men showing particular promise in the series will be promoted to the regular second eleven, while members of the second eleven who do not display the desired proficiency in the game will be relegated to the Haughton Cup series. Thus two important results will be secured: the standard of the second eleven will be kept at its maximum height, and an opportunity for practice and development will be afforded every member of the squad. The captains of the Haughton teams will be chosen by the players themselves, while the managers will be appointed by the Athletic Association. The teams will be named after former University football captains.
The series will be under the personal direction of R. F. Guild '06, the coach of the second team, who originated the system. All men wishing to participate in the series are requested to report to him at the Locker Building this afternoon at 3 o'clock
