Two notable additions have recently been made to the rare collection of the original works of Robert Louis Stevenson which was made by H. E. Widener '07, and presented to the University Library by the Widener family. The new volumes are the collections of the "Vailima Letters" and the "Pacific Letters," acquired from Sir Sidney Colvin, Stevenson's literary friend, by Mr. P. A. B. Widener, of Philadelphia, in order that he might present them to the new library. Of the letters forming the series, twelve were written during the author's Pacific voyages between July, 1888, and October, 1890, and forty-five during his residence in Samoa between November, 1890, and November, 1894. Many are long, and taken together they furnish the fullest and most continuous record of the author's doings and feelings during the last seven years of his life.
Dr. A. S. W. Rosenbach of Philadelphia, has prepared a catalogue of this Stevenson collection, and written an appreciative memoir of the late H. E. Widener '07. The basis of this catalogue is the notes and memorandum slips left by Mr. Widener, showing his great knowledge of Stevenson and his work.
