THE UNION.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Nearly one thousand men use the Union every day. In the face of these statistics which are printed in the Union number of the CRIMSON today, the men who are in the habit of calling the Union a failure must modulate their terms. While the total membership for this year has fallen off slightly as compared with last year's figures, it is high enough to indicate that the Union is far from being a failure. Of course, the membership might be increased. But it is probable that a very large proportion of the men who really want, and can use, the privileges of the Union, have already taken advantage of them by becoming members. The advantages of the Union are too many, and too well known throughout the University for it to be aided very much by the "booming" or "increased publicity" that the men, who have erroneously labeled it a failure, think it needs. The Union is filling its place in University life satisfactorily. The CRIMSON, while it realizes that there are many ways in which the Union might be improved, and that an increased membership and use are desirable, believes, nevertheless, that the Union is to be congratulated on its showing to date.

A fact which should always be remembered when discussing the membership of the Union is that when it was at its highest point memberships were being solicited by personal canvass.
