DEVELOPMENT OF 1916 TEAM

Freshman Baseball Squad Lacks Pitchers But Has Improved Fast.

Prospects for a successful season of the Freshman baseball team are satisfactory. The team has developed well in the spring practice, and is superior to any recent Freshman team at Harvard at this point in the season. Under the direction of Coach Reeves '11, the squad is hitting the ball consistently, and most of the men are fast on the bases. The players are weakest in fielding, but are now showing steady improvement in this department. Clark, Mahan, Nash, Heyer, and Ervin have been the best at the bat so far.

The pitching staff is one of the greatest problems confronting the coaches, for no star material is available. Whitney is the most promising of the pitching candidates, while Cunningham and McKinlock are also strong contenders for the position.

As a result of this consistent work in practice so far, Richardson appears to be almost certain of his job as catcher. At first base Nash has been fielding brilliantly, and has become the best hitter on the team. Second base and shortstop will probably be filled by Ervin and Heyer, both of whom are strong at the bat and accurate throwers. The competition for third base has narrowed down to Demelman, Simons, and Kurtz, all of whom are being tried out.

Clark, Fripp, and Mahan at present compose the outfield. All are good batters, Clark and Mahan having secured home runs in the opening game of the season. The outfielders cover their ground well, and Fripp, a new candidate, has shown remarkable speed on the bases.
