NECESSITIES OF SOCIALISM

MR. J. C. POWYS POINTED OUT BENEFITS AND DANGERS OF SOCIAL SYSTEM.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The necessities and dangers of Socialism were discussed by Mr. James Cowper Powys, A.M., a graduate of Cambridge University, England, in a lecture in Emerson D last evening. In his talk, which was given under the auspices of the Socialist Club, Mr. Powys showed the need for Socialism economically, and mentioned especially the part that college men are to have in developing it.

Students must Furnish Ideas.

"If Socialism is to become the dominant idea of civilization, it will have to be supported by both intellect and force," maintained Mr. Powys. It belongs to the students to furnish the ideas in the revolution to reconcile the capitalists and the wage-earners.

Chance to Develop Genius.

Mr. Powys argued that with Socialism would come an end of graft in public office, because the incentive for private ownership would vanish with the elimination of private property. The speaker's ideal was to have machinery supplant much present human labor, so that men will have shorter working hours and consequently a chance to develop genius and individuality.
