DEBATING IN PRECARIOUS POSITION.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Never before has the Harvard Debating Team had to face so serious a problem as that which confronts it this year in the matter of finances. As long as all undergraduate organizations representing Harvard were supported by general subscriptions, the Debating Team found it easy to defray its expenses in this manner. But since all the other organizations have been relieved of the necessity of calling upon the students to contribute to their support, the Debating Team has found an existence dependent upon student generosity very precarious. Some income is received from the Coolidge Fund, but it is far from sufficient to pay the annual expenses of the teams. This year the debating management has adopted the experiment of holding a sale of tickets for the debate with Yale, hoping thereby to obviate the necessity of soliciting subscriptions.

Whether or not the new plan for financing debating will be successful remains to be seen. The interest stimulated by the Class Debates last fall would seem to give promise of a good sale of tickets for the coming contest, and we hope most optimistically that everyone will lend their aid in supporting an activity which has such an enviable list of victories.
