TRIALS FOR MEDAL CONTEST

The sixteenth annual speaking contest for the Pasteur medal will be held under the joint auspices of the French department and the Debating Council on Friday evening, January 16, 1914. The first preliminary trials will be held on Friday, December 19. Candidates should prepare five-minute speeches on either side of the question, "Resolved that the President of the French Republic should have a veto power similar to hat of the President of the United states". Ten men will be retained at the preliminary trials who should prepare ten-minute speeches on the same subject for the finals. Reference are posted in the History Library in Harvard Hall and may be consulted there. Candidates should send in their names to R. L. west '14, Stoughton 7 before Thursday, December 18, at 6 o'clock. Further information can be secured of Mr. Louis J. Mercier, of the French Department.

The Pasteur medal was established in 1898 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The medal is awarded to the successful contestant in an annual debate on a subject drawn from contemporary. French politics, the debate to be conducted in English. The administration of the prize is in the hands of the French Department which is authorized to call on the aid of other instructors, students or graduates in determining the precise conditions of the competition and in selecting judges.
