LIGHT WORK THE PROGRAM

EXPERIMENTING WITH NEW FORMATION.--VETERANS' RETURN HELPS LINE.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Soldiers Field proved too wet for the regular scrimmaging yesterday, so the football squad put in an afternoon learning new plays, based upon a formation which has not been used before by the squad this year. The drill was very thorough, concluding with an hour of dummy scrimmage in which an attempt was made to perfect the new formations. They look well in theory, but it is of course difficult to tell just how they will actually work until they are tried out in a game. The practice this afternoon will probably also be light, as is the custom the day before a game.

Several of the players who have been out of the game during the past week or so rejoined the squad yesterday. Pennock appeared at his old position at guard, and Trumbull was again at centre, after being laid up for about ten days with muscle bruises. Their return will greatly strengthen the line. Cowen, at left guard is at present being given a rest on account of minor injuries, but he is expected to return during the early part of next week.

The squad of ends, seriously weakened by the disqualification, of H. St. J. Smith '14 and the retirement of Gardiner, was somewhat re-inforced yesterday when J.A. Milholland '14 and W.B.D. Dana '14 returned after a week's absence. A new candidate was also produced in the person of W. Whitney '16, a member of last year's Freshman team, who has hitherto been playing in the backfield. Since there was no regular playing yesterday the form of all these men is as yet an unknown quantity.

The University team lined up yesterday in the same way in which it may expected to appear in Bates game tomorrow, except that Brickley, who was not on the field yesterday, will replace McKinley. Coolidge may also get in at the start at right end, where Milholland played today.

The line-up yesterday was as follows: UNIVERSITY  SUBSTITUTES O'Brien, l.e.  r.e., Whitney Storer, l.t.  r.t., Gilman Mills, l.g.  r.g., Underwood Trumbull, c.  c., Soucy Pennock, r.g.  l.g., Weston Hitchcock, r.t.  l.t., Elke Milholland, r.e.  l.e., L. Curtis Bradlee, q.b.  q.b., Logan Hardwick, l.h.b.  r.h.b. Bettle' Mahan, r.h.b.  l.h.b. Amory McKinlock, f.b.  f.b. Willetts

The game against Bates tomorrow will begin at 3 o'clock. Last year, Bates did not play the University, but in 1911 was the first team on the schedule being defeated by a score of 15 to 0. The officials will be: W. Tufts, of Brown, referee; W.H. Burke, of Worcester, umpire; E.S. Sand, of Annapolis head linesman.

As yet, no definite arrangements have been concluded concerning a team to fill in the vacancy in the scheduled on October 25, caused by the cancellation of the game with Norwich.
