The MacDowell Fellowship of $600, offered for the best original play submitted in yearly MacDowell competition, has been awarded for this year to a graduate of Smith, Miss Abby Merchant of Gloucester, Mass. This competition is open to the country at large, and all members of the University who have not taken Professor Baker's course in the Technique of the Drama. The University was well represented but its candidates failed to come up to the mark of Miss Merchant's production.
The interesting aspect of the competition was the fact that the 21 competitors represented 12 states and Canada. Fifteen of the plays were submitted by men and six by women, and the high order of five of the plays made it difficult to decide on the winner.
Miss Merchant has had considerable experience in magazine editorial work, and her prize play, called "His Womenfolk," is in four acts.
