WORK ON STADIUM BRIDGE

In dredging out the river-bed for the Cambridge pier of the new Stadium bridge, the workmen have come upon an old corduroy road, which probably served as the first bridge across the river in this vicinity. The road is remarkably well preserved, and the timber beyond being thoroughly watersoaked is otherwise in first-class condition. The logs extend down into the ground to a depth of twenty feet below the present river-bed.

Excellent progress is being made on the new bridge. Half of the old structure has already been demolished and about three-quarters of the dredging for the foundations of the Cambridge Pier has been done. The work of driving the piles for the pier will be begun the middle of next week and will require about five days. Special machinery has been devised to break up the ice on the river and thus prevent any delay to the work.
