YALE FOOTBALL TEAM

Wealth of Old Material to Choose 1912 Team From.--Summary of Prospects.

The Yale University football squad has been in New Haven since September 9 under the direction of Head Coach Howe, captain of last year's team, Field, head coach last year, and Captain Spalding. Work has of course been so far light, though the men have reported at the field for two sessions of it a day; and will continue to do so until college opens next Wednesday.

Beside Captain Spalding at halfback, Bomeisler, Gallauer, Philbin, Dunn, and Ketcham, of the veterans have returned. Walter Camp, Jr., who was given a place at half-back on the All-American second team last year has not yet reported, and it is probable that he will be unable to play all season owing to an operation this summer. Beside Camp, however, there is a wealth of material for the backfield. Captain Spalding, Dunn and Philbin, all "Y" men, and Castles of last year's Freshman team are first class players, and from then an admirable combination for the line breaking game which it is in the general consensus of opinion will be much resorted to this year can be built up. Coach Howe is devoting a large part of his time to trying out the quarterback material for a man capable of filling his place. So far Cornell, halfback on last year's freshman team seems to have the call. He is an exceptionally fast runner, and uses his head well in directing the men.

At the ends of the line Bomeisler and Gallauer will undoubtedly be found in the big games. The latter was placed on the All-American team last year by Walter Camp. The remaining line positions are somewhat in doubt, except that of centre, which Ketcham, generally considered the best centre in the East last year is practically sure of holding. Cooney, a former substitute in that position has been shifted to guard and seems likely material to fill one of the vacancies left by Francis and McDevitt. Green, of last year's freshmen, Randall and Arnold are other men whose work has been encouraging at guard. No veteran material is on hand for the tackles, Scully and Paul of the 1911 team having both graduated. York, Osborne, and Pumpelly, 1915 men, and some of last year's substitutes are trying for them. In addition to the men mentioned there are the members of last year's Freshman class in the Sheffield Scientific School who were debarred from playing on their freshman team and have not yet had a chance to show their ability.
