LANE LECTURE ON PERICLES

Dr. Paul Shorey '78, Ph.D., LL.D., professor of Greek at the University of Chicago, delivered the first of the Lane lectures on "Life and Letters at Athens" yesterday evening, taking as his subject "The Age of Pericles."

Dr. Shorey did not discuss the differences between the Age of Pericles and modern times, but revealed the life in Athens by pointing out the features of its similarity with modern life. The first Persian war stirred the Athenians to the supreme manifestation of their genius. Their indominatable spirit in the attempt to build the fairest of cities was curbed by the destructive period of the thirty years war. Although the shadow of war was constantly upon the Athenians, they accomplished in eighty years the building of great cities containing wonderful specimens of art; the establishing of a democratic machinery of government with courts of justice; and the development of logic, judicial oratory, and political theory.

Dr. Shorey will give the second lecture of the Lane series, taking as his subject "Aristophanes" in Emerson D tomorrow evening at 8 o'clock.
