Mr. Johnston on Political Geography

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Professor R. M. Johnston of the History Department gave the first of a series of seven lectures on "The Political Geography of Europe" yesterday afternoon.

Professor Johnston pointed out that, although until recent years its study has been too much neglected, political and historical geography has a direct bearing upon history--especially modern history--and commerce. The lecture further traced the history of the important Italian seaports, notably Genos, Naples, Taranto, Venice and Triste.

Old World civilization lay around the Mediterranean; the geographical centre of that civilization, because of its water communication, was essential to it. Today water communication is not of such importance.
