Plans for the clubhouse of the Harvard Club of Boston, whose construction was proposed in the fall, have taken on a more definite shape. After careful consideration, the corner of Commonwealth and Massachusetts avenues has been chosen as the sight. The entire space will not be occupied, plenty of room being left for future addition.
The plans, now rather general, will be matured and work started as soon as a sustaining fund of $100,000 is pledged. It is expected, however, that there will be but little delay on this score, some subscriptions having already come in.
Although changes in detail may be made, the general arrangement will be as follows: The building itself will be a large one of five stories--the maximum allowed by the law in that neighborhood--with an extra elevation in the rear for sleeping accommodations. The first floor will be occupied by a living room, a billiard room, and a cafe. A spacious assembly room, Harvard Hall, will take up the greater part of the second story, providing ample quarters for large dinners and meetings. Behind it there will be a library and a private dining room. The rest of the space will be devoted to sleeping and bath rooms. In all, the clubhouse will probably contain about forty-five bed-chambers. In the basement will be a swimming pool, and in an ell outside the building, four squash courts.
The estimated value of the land, clubhouse, and furnishings, according to the building committee, is about $570,000. The New York Harvard Club has a membership of 3,300. The Boston club, with the view of decreasing dues, hopes to equal or even exceed this number.
