SECOND CREW WON RACE

Defeated University by One Length, With Two Lengths Start.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The second University crew won the handicap race in the Basin yesterday afternoon, defeating the University eight by one length and the third by two and one-half lengths. As the second received two lengths start, it will be seen that the University was able to gain only one length in the mile and seven-eights. The crew rowed very well while the University eight, though it cut down one length of its handicap in the first mile, was unable to get any speed in the rough water at the lower end of the course. The stroke was raised and the rowing became very ragged.

At the start both first and second crews began to gain quickly on the third, and at the half mile had gained a length. At Harvard Bridge the second had gone into first place, a little open water showing between it and the third which was half a length ahead of the first. For the next half mile the third made a good spurt, holding the University eight and gaining slightly on the second. At the last quarter mile the first crew attempted to spurt, passing the third, but was unable to gain on the second, which finished a length in the lead.

The orders were as follows:

University crew.--Stroke, Pirnie; 7, E. D. Morgan; 6, Trumbull; 5, Mills; 4, Goodale; 3, Stratton; 2, Meyer; bow, Reynolds; cox., Abeles.

Second crew.--Stroke, Harwood; 7, L. Curtis; 6, MacVicar; 5, Saltonstall; 4, Cutler; 3, Carver; 2, Fuller; bow, Storrow; cox., Gallaher.

Third crew.--Stroke, E. Curtis; 7, Hubbard; 6, J. Morgan; 5, Weston; 4, Lothrop; 3, Apollonto; 2, Wolf; bow, Chadwick; cox, Munro.
