The need of the University for an adequate building for the use of the Department of Music will be satisfied in a short time by the erection of a music building, in accordance with plans approved last year.
A Harvard alumnus, who wishes his name withheld for the present, has promised $80,000 for the erection of such a structure, if $50,000 is raised for its maintenance.
Professor W. R. Spalding, of the Department of Music, who has the collection of the $50,000 in charge, stated last night that the friends of the University have taken a generous interest in the new building, and have already promised $25,000. It is expected that the remainder of the fund will be collected within a short time, and work on the new hall will then commence. The plans for the hall are the work of J. M. Howells '91.
