HARD FOOTBALL PRACTICE

Scrimmage was again the program on Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon for the University football squad. Altogether there was 40 minutes of the work, with the first team on the field for the first 15 minutes of the period.

During that time the second team was scored on twice and there would have been another score had the coaches allowed the play to continue. After the first team left the field, the substitutes lined up against the second team, the final score of 5 to 0 in favor of the substitutes resulting from a touchdown made in the first three minutes of play.

In the first period Wendell and Reynolds did most of the work in advancing the ball down the field by straight football. The only open work was a forward pass from Freedley to Hollister which netted 15 yards. Otherwise the backs made most of their gains on the skin-tackle play, the line opening up the holes for this formation in excellent fashion. The second score was made by Reynolds on plunges through left tackle and left guard. A play which would have resulted in another score occurred when Gardiner intercepted a forward pass on the second team's 40-yard line and had a clear field.

Then the substitute eleven took the place of the first team and, starting at the middle of the field, tore through the second team line for a score in three minutes. Morrison made the tally and was used most of the time in advancing the ball. After this show of spirit, the substitutes seemed to be unable to renew the attack and both teams turned to the punting game. At this point the coaches broke into the play at intervals to correct minor defects in the individual work. T. H. Frothingham attempted two drop kicks when the substitutes approached their opponents' goal-line but both times the ball went wide of the uprights.

Kersberg is now coaching the guard candidates regularly and yesterday B. G. Waters '94 was out in football clothes with the guards and tackles. He will be on the field off and on for the rest of the season. Captain Fisher did not get into the scrimmage yesterday, as his knee is still bothering him. It is doubtful if the coaches will use him in the Amherst game tomorrow. Smith was also layed off for the day, but it is expected that he will be in shape today.
