The University association football team was defeated by Springfield Training School by the score of 2 to 1 on Soldiers Field Saturday afternoon.
In the first half Harvard, playing with the wind, kept the ball well within its opponents' territory, and after some very pretty team-work Needham scored. At the beginning of the second half the visitors took a sudden brace and rushed the ball down for two tallies. The University team then recovered and made repeated attempts to score, but was unsuccessful. The Springfield team excelled in team work but lacked the aggressiveness displayed by Harvard, especially by Needham in the forward line and Rushmore and Francke in the backfield. Although marred by a number of fouls, the game was on the whole a very good exhibition of soccer.
The teams lined up as follows:
Harvard: g., Nichols; r.b., Barron, l.b., Rushmore; r.h.b., Grant; c.h.b., Francke; l.h.b., Weston, D. F. Fenn; r.o.f., Locke; r.l.f., Needham; c.f., Jennings, Porter; l.i.f., Carnochan; l.o.f., Kimball.
Springfield: g., Smith; r.f., Payne; l.f., Lockley; r.h.b., Bowers; c.h.b., R. L. Mann; l.h.b., Surbeck; r.o.f., Irwin; r.l.f., Eadie; c.f., Cochrane; l.i.f., Carter; l.o.f., Rudkin.
Score--Springfield 2, Harvard 1. Goals--Needham, Eadle, Cochrane. Umpire--Williams. Linesmen--Chittenden, H. Mann. Time--30-minute halves.
