VERY ENCOURAGING PRACTICE

FORWARD PASSES AND WENDELL'S WORK FEATURED BEST SCRIMMAGE OF YEAR.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University football team, in a long and stiff scrimmage yesterday, showed the best form it has displayed this season. The line, in particular, exhibited marked improvement over its work in the Maine game, and held the second attack or threw it back for losses almost every time. Captain Wendell played in scrimmage for the first time and his runs and line plunges were the features of the day. Team A tried two long forward passes, both of which gained touchdowns.

Scrimmage Begins After Secret Practice.

Before the line-up, which was postponed by rain, the first secret practice of the season was held in the Cage. When the teams finally faced each other, the seconds were given the ball on their opponents' 25-yard line. After an exchange of kicks, team A received the ball near the seconds' goal. From here a 20-yard pass by Gardner to Smith took the ball across for a touchdown. Brickley kicked the goal. Score: University 7, Seconds 0.

Second Score Due to Wendell.

The second team again got the ball and Greustein did some good line plunging for steady gains. The first team now received the ball on its own 25-yard line, and after a few straight rushes it was given to Wendell. He carried it around left end for 75 yards, throwing off three of the second team men who tried to tackle him, and dodging through the whole opposing line. It was a pretty run, and Wendell completed the march up the field by crossing the goal line in a plunge through centre, and kicking the goal afterward. Score: University 14, Seconds 0.

The seconds were now given the ball, and for a while tried without much success to penetrate team A's line. Brickley shortly secured the ball on a fumble, and ran with it 45 yards before he was tackled. Bradlee was then substituted for him.

Straight plunges through tackle carried the ball forward to the seconds' 2-yard line. Here the second team line strengthened and held team A for two plays. But another forward pass around left end, almost exactly like the first, brought another touchdown. The pass was from Gardner to Felton, who had taken Smith's place a few minutes earlier. Storer kicked an easy goal. Score: University 21, Seconds 0.

Team B Made Two Touchdowns.

At this point team B was put in. Its line seemed a little weaker than team A's, for the seconds were able to gain somewhat. It soon braced and took the ball away, however, carrying it down the field to within striking distance of the goal, when a short end run crossed the line. Withington failed to kick the goal. Score: University 27, Seconds 0. By this time it was quite dark and the men found difficulty in playing. Team B took the ball, and Bradlee eluded his opponents for 40 yards. Then more line plunges brought in the final touchdown. Score: University 33, Seconds 0.
