The semi-final round in the singles of the University championship tennis tournament was played yesterday with the following result: W. M. Washburn '15 defeated E. H. Woods '14, 6-0, 6-2, 6-3; J. J. Armstrong '14 defeated H. G. Smith '13, 6-1, 6-3, 6-8, 6-3.
Washburn was never pressed in his match. Woods played strongly and consistently, but was unable to make progress until his opponent began making outs. He seldom tried net play, for Washburn passed him there on almost every opportunity. The latter's strokes were made in perfect form, and his serving and playing were especially accurate.
The match between Smith and Armstrong was much closer. Armstrong took the first set with ease. The second set also went to him, but by a much narrower margin. In the third, he netted and made frequent outs. With the score at six all, Smith forced the play, and won the last two games. Armstrong steadied in the final match and won with little difficulty.
