CROSS-COUNTRY PROSPECTS

Largest Squad in Harvard's Cross-Country History.--Freshman Squad Also Large.--Season's Outlook.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Sixty-one candidates, the largest number in the history of cross-country at Harvard, made up the University squad which reported to Coach Alfred Shrubb yesterday afternoon. These men, together with twenty-six candidates for the Freshman team, took the first long run that the candidates have had this season, and in the five miles that were covered many of the men made very good time. The Freshman squad will be separated from the varsity runners tomorrow and hereafter will receive special coaching by Shrubb, assisted by F. D. Everett '11 and possibly by H. Jaques, Jr., '11, captain of the cross-country team two years ago.

Prospects Unusually Bright.

The work for the University squad during the past week has been of rudimentary nature, but judging from the practice already held, even though no thorough test has been given, it is evident that this fall's University team will be an unusually strong one. Indeed, it may be said that never before have the prospects been so bright. All of the men who placed in the intercollegiate run last fall, with the exception of P. R. Withington, captain of last year's team, are back in College. Captain Lawless, who, on account of sickness, was unable to run in last year's intercollegiate race, seems to be in the best of condition and should prove to be even better than he was in the race against Yale last fall when his work received very favorable comment by press and critics.

Many Veterans on Squad.

Of the other men who ran against Yale at New Haven the following six are out for the team this fall: F. H. Blackman '14, R. St.B. Boyd '14, C. W. Burrage '13, F. W. Copeland '13, A. F. deGozzaldi '14 and H. M. Warren '13. Of these Copeland and Boyd stand out because of their consistently good work and these two men with Captain Lawless will make a trio hard to defeat.

Promising Material from 1915.

From the 1915 Freshman team there are several promising candidates, most notable among them being B. S. Carter, H. C. MacLure, E. P. Stone and H. E. Fitzgibbons.

The work of both University and Freshman squads for the next few days will be light. It is probable that the varsity candidates will run over the Chestnut Hill course on Thursday or Friday of this week, and during the season the squad will run two or three times over the Technology course.

The men making up the University and Freshman squads are as follows:
