Shaler Memorial Research Trip

The second research trip under the Shaler Memorial Research Fund will be undertaken during the coming summer by Professor D. W. Johnson, of the Department of Geology. The fund, amounting to something over $30,000, was given by friends of the late Professor Shaler at the time of his death. The income is to be used for geological research.

The trip this summer will consist of a study of shore line changes along the Atlantic coast. Professor Johnson, accompanied by two assistants, will examine the more important shore line features from the Bay of Fundy to southern Florida, giving special attention to geologically recent changes in the forms of beaches and to supposed evidence of recent coastal subsidence. Lines of levels will be run between the ocean and lagoons, bays, etc., to ascertain the relative heights of high tides at different points on the irregular shores, in the belief that the data thus secured will throw light on the problem of coastal subsidence. During the latter part of the summer important localities on the coasts of England, Holland and Sweden will also be visited for the purpose of making comparisons with similar localities on the coast of North America.

The first trip under this Research Fund was undertaken several years ago by Professor J. B. Woodworth. He spent some time in Brazil investigating supposed remains of glacial deposits.
