1914 Outclassed by Andover, 9 to 1

The Freshman nine suffered the first defeat of its season at the hands of Andover Saturday afternoon, by the score of 9 to 1. Weakness of the home team in the box and failure of the batsmen to connect safely when men were on bases were the causes of Harvard's loss of the game.

Ripley and Mahan did the twirling for the visitors and held the Freshmen down to five hits, only one of which, Wingate's triple, was productive of a tally. On the other hand, Andover collected a total of 17 safe drives, including two doubles and a home run by Reilly.

Both teams fielded well, the Freshmen having the better of the argument, as three misplays were given the visitors, while 1914 made but one.

A very pretty piece of fielding was shown by Curtis and Wingate in the fourth inning. Doherty was on third when Middlebrook hit sharply to Curtis. The runner was so fast that it was impossible to attempt to catch him at first, yet Curtis made a feint to throw to Milholland, and then snapped the ball to Wingate, Doherty being caught off the base.

Captain Wingate played a fine game in the field, accepting eight chances without a misplay, while Boles and Reilly of Andover had some fine stops to their credit.
