Syracuse, with the best baseball team seen on Soldiers Field this spring, defeated the University nine, 5 to 3, yesterday afternoon. It was only because of a ninth inning batting rally that Harvard was able to score at all. Throughout the rest of the game Captain Cottrell of the visitors pitched masterly ball. In the last period, however, he let up a bit and allowed both Potter and McLaughlin, the first two men up, to single. Hann advanced Potter with a sacrifice fly, and then a double steal was negotiated by which Potter scored. Reeves drove out the longest hit of the season to centre field for a home run, McLaughlin coming in ahead of him. Gibson singled and Coon, who batted for Ernst, drew a pass, as Cottrell was becoming somewhat nervous. Carr then flied to short stop, ending the game.
The University team had a decidedly off day and during the first part of the game played very erratic ball. Syracuse got a single, and a home run off Hardy in the first inning, scoring two runs. Kling hit for three bases but was caught trying to get home. Babson replaced him at this point, but was in turn replaced by Ernst in the seventh inning. Three bad errors materially assisted in giving Syracuse their other three runs. The fine fielding of the visitors was in sharp contrast to that of Harvard. They made many sensational stops and catches.
