Two races were held over the mile and three-quarters course in the Basin Saturday afternoon. The first, between the second and third University crews, was won by the former by two lengths. Shortly after the start, at the Union Boat Club, the second crew made up its handicap of a length and a half, both crews rowing 34 strokes to the minute. At Harvard Bridge it led by a length, and with the exception of one spurt by the third, this lead was steadily increased up to the finish.
In the second race the University crew started from the Union Boat Club, maintaining a stroke of 30 until Harvard Bridge was reached. Here the Freshman eight started. After getting well under way the Freshmen picked up half a length, but the University crew, putting the stroke up to 34, drew away steadily. At the finish a lead of four lengths had been opened by the University eight.
For the first half-mile the boat was very unsteady, as the men hurried their hands away and did not draw out the finish. During the last part of the race, however, the form was much improved. The turn on the catch was better and the leg drive was stronger. At the finish a stroke of 36 was easily reached. The poor showing of the Freshman eight may be explained largely by the fact that much water had been shipped while the crew was rowing down to the start, and the men were cold from the long wait. No times were given out.
The orders:
University crew.--Stroke, Goodale; 7, R. W. Cutler; 6, Strong; 5, Withington; 4, Hooper; 3, Metcalf; 2, Waite; bow, Balch; cox., C. Abeles.
Second crew.--Stroke, Eager; 7, Anderson; 6, Stratton; 5, Beane; 4, Nelson; 3, G. C. Cutler; 2, L. D. Smith; bow, Meyer; cox., Voerhees.
Third crew.--Stroke, Richardson; 7, P. D. Smith; 6, Weston; 5, Peabody; 4, Lincoln; 3, Parker; 2, Sullivan; bow, Wiggins; cox., A. Abeles.

Newton to Resume Seat Today.
Several changes will be made in the orders today. Newton, who has been ill, will return to his position at 4 in the University boat, Hooper taking Waite's place at 2. Richardson will go from stroke in the third eight to the same position in the second, and Wiggins will go in at bow.
The third eight will be disbanded and the following will be retained for a four oar with substitutes: Anderson, Beane, Lincoln, Nelson, Parker, Peabody, L. D. Smith.
