FRESHMEN DEFEATED YALE

By Score of 3 to 1 In Poorly Played Game.--Sortwell Excelled.

New Haven, Conn., May 25, 1909.--The Freshman baseball team defeated the Yale freshmen, 6 to 4, in the first game of the series, on Yale Field this afternoon. The game was full of spectacular plays and was not decided until the last man was out. The Freshmen won by bunching their hits. The fielding of both teams was erratic and errors were responsible for a number of the runs. Babson pitched well, allowing but five hits, though he weakened slightly toward the end of the game.

Brinsmade was in the box for Yale and held the Freshmen safe until the third inning, when four hits and two errors brought four runs across the plate. In the fifth inning Smith replaced Brinsmade and allowed few hits until the ninth inning, when two more runs were added.

The Yale freshmen did not score until the sixth inning, when Murchie hit to the running track for a home run. Though they braced in the last two innings, Harvard's lead was too great to overcome. Both Babson and Smith showed ability in pulling out of difficult holes, each retiring the side without a score when the bases were full with but one out.
