INTERCOLLEGIATE CHESS

Twentieth Annual Tournament Begins Tomorrow.--Previous Winners.

The twentieth annual intercollegiate chess tournament between Harvard, Columbia, Yale and Princeton will begin tomorrow morning in the rooms of the West Side Republican Club in New York City. The University team will leave Cambridge this afternoon. The play takes place between the hours of 9 and 1 in the morning, 2 and 6 in the afternoon, and 8 and 10 in the evening.

The intercollegiate cup, presented to the league by E. A. Caswell, will be held one year by the winning team. In order to gain permanent possession of it, however, a team must win it for ten successive years. Of the nineteen tournaments held so far, nine have been won by Harvard, seven by Columbia, and one each by Princeton and Yale. As Harvard and Yale tied for first place two years ago; and Columbia won last year, there is no possibility of any team's securing the cup permanently for at least eight years.
