THEATRE AND UNIVERSITY

Percy MacKaye '97, the eminent dramatist, spoke in the Living Room of the Union last evening on "University Opportunities in the Theatre."

He began by showing how much the universities can help towards bettering the conditions of the theatre. Some universities have realized this, and the University of California, in particular, has built a Greek theatre in the open air for the production of plays of real dramatic worth. The public is also awakening to the responsibility owed to the theatre, and leagues have been organized in various cities for the advancement and the strengthening of the best in. fluences of the drama. On the other hand, the theatre can bring to the university man the great art of the drama and can broaden and educate him by its splendid democracy.

The practical opportunities for university men in the theatre are open on all sides. As managers, they are especially needed, since there is a great opportunity in that field for men with original ideas and a keen understanding of life. Mr. MacKaye spoke especially of the work of Professor Baker of Harvard in spreading a wider appreciation of the opportunities of college men in dramatic work. In speaking of Harvard, he emphasized its great need for a University theatre, which should be the focus of all the dramatic activities of the University and where men could acquire the technique and skill necessary for a dramatic career
