STIFF FOOTBALL PRACTICE

Potter's Forward Passes to Smith Feature.--University Offence Weak.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The hardest football work of the season, not excepting the Bates game of last Saturday, was held yesterday afternoon on Soldiers Field. For the first part of the practice there was tackling on the dummies for the whole squad. Then all the punters went into the Stadium and had a short session before the squad was divided up into three teams for the signal drill. Potter was at the head of the University team again yesterday and it looks as though he would give Wigglesworth, last year's regular, a very hard fight for the position. Potter's passes to Smith were a feature of the practice and seldom failed to gain ground. Huntington was not on the field and his place at centre was taken by Storer. Milholland was also given a rest. Campbell replaced T. H. Frothingham at right halfback.

For the first 20 minutes the University team played a close game with the second team in which the former scored one touchdown by Storer but missed an attempted drop-kick by Potter from the 15-yard line. During most of this time the ball went back and forth in mid-field, neither side being able to score. Campbell got away three times for long runs but when the play approached the second team goal line, the defence stiffened, and the first team backs were powerless. Of the three times that the goal line was endangered, one chance to score was lost on a penalty, another on a poor forward pass, and the third time the second team took the ball on downs. After 20 minutes of play Storer caught a forward pass intended for the second team end, and ran 50 yards for a touchdown.

At this point the University team substitutes took the place of the second team and the play became faster. Graustein made several large gains through the right side of the University line but these were mostly counteracted by Potter's excellent punting. Blackall, of the substitutes, also made several kicks of over 40 yards after he took T. H. Frothingham's place at fullback. Finally the ball was worked to the substitutes' 20-yard line, where Potter missed another try at a drop-kick.

After a five minute wait, the substitutes lined up against the second team and here again the teams seemed evenly matched. The feature of this scrimmage was a 30-yard run through a broken field by Hardwick of the second team. After 20 minutes of play the substitutes crossed the second's goal line by steady rushing from the 25-yard line.

The line-ups follow: UNIVERSITY TEAM.  SUBSTITUTES.
