TO SENIOR ADVISERS.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

During the summer the Seniors who were appointed by Dean Castle to act as Freshman advisers did a certain amount of work with the view of welcoming the new students of the College and smoothing out their difficulties. For the most part the intercourse between adviser and Freshman was necessarily by letter, and up to now it may have been impossible for the two to meet. This morning the CRIMSON publishes a list of all the Freshmen with their College addresses, and thus the way is made clear for every Senior to see the men on his list.

An adviser may feel that his work is finished if he has written a letter that has not been answered. He argues that if the Freshman does not care enough to answer a letter, he will care still less to see its writer. Yet a very little thought must convince him how many other reasons there may be for his not having received an answer, other than mere in difference on the part of his advisee. The letter might not have reached the advisee, or his reply might now be lying without any means of being forwarded in the post office at the town where the adviser first wrote. Give the Freshman the benefit of the doubt, and arrange to see him, or drop him a postal to come to you. If he needs your help at all, he needs it now, for this is the time when he should be started on the right track. Later your counsel will be of far less value. If you were glad to be appointed an adviser and thought it worth while to devote some time and energy toward fulfilling your obligation, surely it is worth while to strike a second blow while the iron is hot that will leave you no room to fear that your part was not done. A smoker or a reception for all your own and your room-mate's advisees sometime in the future when College is well under way is an excellent plan. Just now, however, it is the time for the Senior to meet his group of Freshmen and make himself their "friend for life." For without it be from friend to friend, advice can have but little weight.
