UNIVERSITY REGISTER PLANS

The 1911-1912 volume of the Harvard University Register, which is now owned by the Student Council, will be placed on sale about December 10. Last June the Student Council purchased the rights of this publication and the present volume will be number XXXVIII. The Council of 1910-1911 felt the need of a suitable and authoritative record of student life and authorized the 1912 nominating committee of the Council to arrange for the publication of such a book. Accordingly the following men were appointed to take charge of the matter: advisory editors, Dean B. S. Hurlbut '87, Acting Dean E. H. Wells '97, Assistant Dean W. R. Castle, Jr., '00, R. C. Plans were formulated last spring for the publication of a new book. It was to contain a complete account of officers and members of all undergraduate organizations and teams, and various other directories and records. These statistics would be of invaluable assistance to many persons, inasmuch as much of this information is contained in no other publication.

When, late in June, the opportunity presented itself of purchasing outright the Register, which had hitherto been run solely as a private venture, the Student Council took advantage of it immediately. Thus the beginning of a new publication was rendered unnecessary and as a result of the purchase the Council is now publishing the only book of this nature, a book which has the prestige of thirty-seven years.

The Register this year will, however, conform to the original plans of the Council for such a book. The new volume will therefore contain 325 pages of reading matter, instead of 175, as formerly. It will be complete and reliable in every detail and its arrangement will be on a new basis. Many new features will be added, such as a directory of students by dormitories, and a geographical directory by home residences, based on the new registration cards.

The Faculty is highly in favor of the publication and President Lowell has granted the use of the University seal.
