CHESS TEAM IN THIRD PLACE

The University chess team was third in the nineteenth annual intercollegiate chess tournament with Columbia, Princeton, and Yale. Columbia was first with a score of 8 1-2 games out of a possible 12, Yale second with a total of 7, the University team third with 6, and Princeton fourth with 2 1-2. Of the previous tournaments, Harvard has won 9, Columbia 6, and Yale 1. Last year Harvard and Yale tied for first place.

The tournament was held at the West Side Republican Club, New York, on December 22, 23, and 24. In the first day's play Harvard defeated Princeton 3 1-2 to 1-2 and Columbia defeated Yale 3 to 1. On the second day Columbia gained the lead by winning three games from Princeton, one of which went by default, making the totals Columbia 6, and Princeton 1 1-2. Yale defeated the University team by 3 to 1, making Harvard 4 1-2 and Yale 4.

On the last day Columbia increased its lead, defeating Harvard by 2 1-2 to 1 1-2, while Yale defeated Princeton 3 to 1, thereby gaining second place.
