Professor Silas Marcus MacVane '73, McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History, the oldest active member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, has announced his intention of resigning during the coming spring.
Professor MacVane was born on Prince Edward Island in 1842. He received the degree of A.B. from Acadia College, Nova Scolia, in 1865, as well as from the University. He was also awarded the honorary degree of A.M. by Acadia College in 1895.
Shortly after graduating, Professor MacVane became an instructor in Political Economy, and later an assistant professor and professor of History. In 1886 he assumed his present position. He has written several works on History and Economics.
