The Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University has notified the heads of the more prominent educational institutions in this country that a lectureship on the history and institutions of the United States has been established at Oxford to be held by American scholars. The subject matter of the lectures may be political, institutional, economic, or relating to the social history or conditions of the United States.
The appointment of the lecturer is entrusted to a board of nine electors, of which the Vice-Chancellor, the American Ambassador to England, and the Regius Professor of Modern History are members. The Board of Electors has formed an advisory committee in America, with which it is to consult in regard to the selection of a lecturer.
The Advisory Committee includes President Lowell, President Hadley of Yale, President Butler of Columbia, Gov. Woodrow Wilson, and the Right Hon. James Bryce, British Ambassador to the United States. It is expected that the first appointment to this lectureship will be made shortly, and that the first series of lectures will be delivered this summer.
