FOOTBALL WITH BATES TODAY

University Team Will Play First Game by New Rules at 3.30 o'clock.

The University football team will start its season with the game against Bates in the Stadium this afternoon at 3.30 o'clock. The Bates game was also the first on the schedule last year, Harvard winning 11 to 0. The game was not an especially fast one but there was considerable team work and the defence was strong.

Bates has played only one game this year as against two last year; on Saturday it defeated Maine Central Institute 17-0, using the forward pass very successfully. Owing to the men who had been at Frazier's Island returning late to Cambridge, the University team has had only three scrimmages. Nevertheless, as a result of this preliminary practice and also of the thorough drilling during the past ten days, the men are all in good condition and should show up well in today's game. Eight of the men in the line-up won their letter last year; the other three, Huntington, a substitute on the University team last fall, and Felton and Lewis, of the 1913 Freshman team, are all experienced players. Captain Withington has moved from guard to tackle and will probably continue to play the entire season at this position. Only three of the Bates' men were in last year's game.

The teams will line up as follows: HARVARD.  BATES. Lewis, l.e.  r.e., Thompson Felton, l.t.  r.t., Jecusco Huntington, l.g.  r.g., Andrews P. D. Smith, c.  c., Cole Fisher, r.g.  l.g., Dyer Withington, r.t.  l.t., McKusick L. D. Smith, r.e.  l.e., Danehey Wigglesworth, q.b.  q.b., Remmert Corbett, l.h.b.  r.h.b., Dennis T. Frothingham, Jr., r.h.b.  l.h.b., Lovell H. C. Leslie, f.b.  f.b., Shepard

The officials for the game today will be: Referee--G. N. Bankart, Dartmouth. Umpire--F. W. Burleigh, Exeter. Field-judge--not yet decided upon. Headlinesman--L. F. Deland, of Boston. Time--10-minute quarters.

Yesterday's Practice.

The practice yesterday was very light. No scrimmage was held against the second eleven but the University team went through a long dummy scrimmage with the substitutes. After this, the squad was given a 5-minute practice in kick-offs from regular formation.
