The building of the research laboratory in memory of Dr. Wolcott Gibbs h.'88 is now assured. A large part of the funds necessary has been put into the Treasurer's hands and most of the remainder has been promised. The small residue yet to be obtained has been kindly underwritten by a friend of the University. The site of the laboratory has not been definitely decided as yet, but it will probably be near the University Museum.
This laboratory is a small one and is only a beginning. The University needs very urgently a completely new chemical plant for the instruction in elementary courses, as well as for research work in organic and industrial chemistry. At least $500,000 will be needed for these buildings, which should form a systematic and connected group, and another half-million will be necessary for their proper endowment.
