University Crew Won From Freshmen

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University crew raced the Freshman eight over the one and Seven-eighths mile course in the Basin Yesterday and won by about three lengths of open water. The University crew left the start rowing about 38 strokes to the minute, the Freshman crew a slightly higher stroke. Shortly after the start, the Freshmen pulled up almost even with the University boat for a short while, but by the time the Harvard Bridge was reached, the University eight was leading by a little open water. Up to this point, the University crew had been rowing in fair form; below the bridge, rough water made the rowing rather ragged, though this did not affect the University crew as much as the Freshmen. The average stroke for both eights in the middle of the race was between 33 and 34; the University care finished with a lead of about three lengths of open water, rowing 38 strokes to the minute.

This race shows considerable provident in the University eight, inasmuch as in previous races the Freshmen have pressed them harder. The time, Slightly under 9 minutes, broke the record for that course.

The orders:

University crew.,--Stroke, Cutler; 7. Waid; 6, Newton; 5, Bacon; 4; Withington; 3, Balch; 2, Sargent; bow, Whitney; cox., King.

Freshman crew.--Stroke, Goodale; 7, Moffat; 6, Stratton; 5, Keeys; 4, Lincoln; 3, Meyer; 2, Cutler; bow, Warren; cox., Abeles.
