New Courses Announced for 1910-11

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences announced 45 new courses to be added to or substituted for the elective courses announced last year, and 28 courses to be omitted. In Philosophy E, Professor Muensterberg's place will be taken by Assistant Professor Holt.

In English two new courses, English 61 2-hf and 62 1-hf, will be given by Assistant Professor Greenough on Eighteenth Century Periodicals, and on the Character of Related Forms.

Among the courses added in German will be two new half-courses in German culture by Professor Francke, German 6 1-hf, and 7 1-hf and two courses in Comparative Literature, German 34 2-hf, and 13 2-hf by Professor Howard. German 11a, 22, and 20e will be omitted.

In History, a course in Diplomatics, History 45 2-hf, by Professor Haskins, and three new courses by Professor Turner in American History have been added. They will be known as History 17, 44, and 20k. These courses will be on the History of the West, Van Buren's Administration, and American History. History 7 and 20b will be omitted.

The changes in Government are the omission of Government 20a, 21, and 29; and the addition of two courses in Modern Government: Government 3 on the History of Parties, by Mr. Holcombe and Government 7 on Municipal Administration, by Assistant Professor Munro. In the History of Religions, Professor Platner is to give a new course on "The Elements of Christianity."

Comparative Literature 1 1-hf, by Professor Wendell, will be a half-course in the first half-year in 1910-11, and there will also be an addition of Comparative Literature 34 2-hf and 35 2-hf, dealing with the dramatic works of Grillparzer, and Life in the Middle Ages.

Besides giving Philosophy E. Assistant Professor Holt will give Philosophy 23 1-hf, the History of Psychological Problems. Two of Professor Santayana's courses, 6 and 10, will be omitted next year, but he will give a new course in the Philosophy of Art, which will also be called Philosophy 10. Other additions will be Philosophy 7b, 6 and 201.

In the department of Architecture, Architecture 4d will be omitted.

Among the new courses offered in Fine Arts are 2b, 4c 2-hf, 5 1-hf, 9, and 20b 2-hf. They will be given by Mr. Mower, Mr. Fitzpatrick, Mr. W. C. Lane, Dr. Ross, and Mr. E. W. Forbes, respectively.

In Geology, courses 11, 15, 20d, c, and 3 will be dropped.

Mathematics will have seven new courses.--Mathematics 1 1-hf, 16b 2-hf, 28 1-hf, 19, 20a, 20e, 20g.

In the department of Music, Professor Max Friedlander from the University of Berlin will give Music 8 1-hf, a General History of Music of the Eighteenth Century; Music 9, the Life and Works of Beethoven; Music 10, Romanticism in Music, from von Weber and Chopin to Berlioz and Schumann; and Music 20, studies in General Musical Knowledge, for advanced students. Professor Spalding will also give a half-course, 1a, in Advanced Harmony, and Mr. Hill will give Music 4b 2-hf, a critical study of D'Indy, Faure, and Debussey.

The only new course in the Department of Forestry is Zo-ology 7d, on Forest Entomology, by Mr. Brues. Forestry 4a will be omitted.

Three courses in Botany, 3 1-hf, 9 2-hf, and 10 2-hf on Morphology, by Professor Jeffrey, and Botany 13 on Plant Physiology by Assistant Professor Osterhout will be added, while Botany 3a 1-hf, and 3b 2-hf, will be omitted
