Second 1913 Crew Defeated Third

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The second Freshman crew defeated the third Freshmen over a one-mile course in the Basin yesterday and by so doing retained its position as the second Freshman eight.

The second got a very good racing start but the third was rather ragged in getting off, and steered too close to the second so that the oars overlapped. As a result, by the time Harvard Bridge was passed, the second eight was leading by about three-quarters of a length. This lead the second maintained and gradually increased to a length and a quarter at the finish at Cottage Farm Bridge, although the third crew made a good final effort with a spurt.

The second maintained a high stroke with a firm grip on the water, but the men in the third boat seemed unable to drive the boat as they should have done. The time was very poor.

The orders:

Second Freshman crew.--Stroke, Eckfeldt; 7, Roosevelt; 6, Chadwick; 5, Handy; 4, Eager; 3, Morgan; 2, Sullivan; bow, Parker; cox., Brownlee.

Third Freshman crew.--Stroke, Davis; 7, Parmenter; 6, Weston; 5, Frothingham; 4, Vickery; 3, Talbot; 2, Sargent; bow, Day; cox., Bowne.
