The Freshman crew won the Beacon Cup Regatta for class crews yesterday afternoon. The Juniors were second, seven lengths behind and the Sophomores followed, three lengths behind the Juniors. The Seniors and second Freshmen tied for fourth place, two lengths in the rear.
The race from the very start proved to be a struggle between the Freshman and Junior crews for first place. Before half the distance to Harvard Bridge had been covered the Freshmen, with a long, steady stroke, were leading the Juniors by a length and a half. By this time the Sophomore, Senior, and second Freshman crews had dropped two lengths in the rear. From here until Harvard Bridge was reached the order remained the same, with the Freshmen gradually increasing their lead. Although the Juniors quickened their stroke, they were unable to catch the leading eight.
When Harvard Bridge was reached the Freshmen had increased their lead on the Juniors to about two lengths. The Sophomores were following two lengths behind the Juniors, while a length behind them were the Seniors and second Freshmen. From here to the end the order remained unchanged, although each crew made several spurts.
Throughout the race the Freshmen showed up well and rowed in good form. The Juniors rowed a higher stroke but in poor form, compared to the leading boat. The eight, however, finished strong, with good reserve power. Richardson, at stroke, rowed a good race, driving his men hard throughout. The 1912 crew lacked power and finish and had little spurting ability. The work of the Senior and second Freshman crews was a distinct disappointment, the former maintaining far too low a stroke, hardly ever rowing faster than 28 strokes.
