The University crew defeated the Freshman eight yesterday in a one and seven-eighths mile race in the Basin by two lengths and a half. Both crews left the starting line rowing thirty-five strokes to the minute with the Freshmen leading, but the superior strength of the University crew soon began to tell, and at Harvard bridge the latter was three quarters of a length ahead. Rowing a higher stroke than the Freshmen, the University eight increased its lead to a length and a half of open water at the finish.
On the whole the showing of the Freshman crew was rather promising, while that of the University eight was discouraging. The University crew won through sheer strength; at no time in the race did the men control their slides or catch off their stretchers. The Freshmen, on the other hand rowed in good form for so early in the season; their watermanship was rather poor, but their inboard work was very creditable. The orders of the crews were:
University crew.--Stroke, Cutler; 7, Waid; 6, Newton; 5, Bacon; 4, Strong; 3, Balch; 2, Sargent; bow, Whitney; cox., Voorhees.
Freshman crew.--Stroke, Goodale; 7, Moffat; 6, Cutler; 5, Keays; 4, Lincoln; 3, Nelson; 2, Stratton; bow, Meyer; cox., Abeles.
