We are forced to admiration of the debating teams that can argue opposite sides of the same question and make both appear right to learned judges. It is a triumph of argumentation, which would be complete except that one is now left in doubt as to whether an income tax is right or wrong. Certainly the outcome shows that the Harvard teams had mastered the subject, and presented it effectively.
Such victories in debating would be more appreciated if they were the natural consequences of a comprehensive debating organization, rather than the forced products of a special occasion. We hope that from the double success a stimulus may reach down to put new life into undergraduate debating, so that it may take its proper place as one of the most practically useful of our College activities.
