CREWS ON RIVER YESTERDAY

For First Time This Season.--Four University and Two 1913 Boats Out.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Although there is still some ice in the river, four crews from the University and two from the Freshman squad were launched yesterday for the first time this year. The ice has prevented the crews from rowing on the river heretofore, and in consequence the first row yesterday was made five days later than last year. Only two floats at the Newell boathouse were down; and the launches will probably not be put into commission for about two weeks.

All the crews rowed up-stream to the Brighton Bridge and returned immediately. The University crew went out in the shell, Iris II, which was presented by Walter Baylies '84, last spring. The new Bacon boat, the first Baylies boat, given in 1908, and the Crowninshield were used by the second, third and fourth crews respectively. Coach Wray supervised the work of the University crew from his single. The University boat at first went away unevenly and the men were slow in recovering. After a while, however, the shell steadied and came back to the boathouse in good form.

The crews rowed in the following order:

First University.--Stroke, Newton; 7, Waid; 6, Cutler; 5, Bacon; 4, Withington; 3, Hooper; 2, Leslie; bow, Sargent; cox., King.

Second University.--Stroke, Forster; 7, Coe; 6, Strong; 5, L. Smith; 4, Waite; 3, Loring; 2, Parker; bow, Whitney; cox., Voorhees.

Third University.--Stroke, Trumbull; 7, Metcalf; 6, M. Peabody; 5, Beane; 4, Cudahy; 3, Anderson; 2, Hoar; bow, Wiggins; cox., Kempton.

Fourth University.--Stroke, Maxwell; 7, Shillito; 6, Fowler; 5, Holt; 4, C. Peabody; 3, Jowett; 2, Thayer; bow, Howell; cox., Everett.

First Freshman.--Stroke, Goodale; 7, Parmenter; 6, G. Cutler; 5, Keays; 4, Lincoln; 3, Stratton; 2, Weston; bow, Roosevelt; cox., Brownlee.

Second Freshman.--Stroke, Meyer; 7, Moffat; 6, Sullivan; 5, Frothingham; 4, Vickery; 3, Handy; 2, Davis; bow, Browne; cox., Bowne.
